In the summer heat, I longed for the cool, crisp satisfaction of a good salad. Nothing tastes quite so good or as wholesome as lettuce straight from the garden. Alas, lettuce is known as a cool season vegetable and as spring temperatures had begun to steadily rise, so too had my inattentiveness. Too little water, inadequate nutrition, my leafy greens had bolted. I am left bereft, toying at my meal, this bitter lettuce of regret.
“Droll thing life is — that mysterious arrangement of merciless logic for a futile purpose. The most you can hope from it is some knowledge of yourself — that comes too late — a crop of inextinguishable regrets.”
